Professor James S. Fishkin Awarded Mongolia’s Highest Honor for Advancing Deliberative Democracy

Congratulations to Professor James S. Fishkin on receiving Mongolia’s highest state honor, the Medal of Friendship, in recognition of his groundbreaking work in deliberative democracy.

Professor Fishkin was honored for introducing Deliberative Polling® to Mongolia, a method that brings together randomly selected citizens to engage in informed discussions on key political issues. Deliberative Polling® has twice played a pivotal role in shaping constitutional amendments in the country. The process is now required by law before the Parliament (the State Great Hural) can consider a change to the constitution.

The influence of Professor Fishkin extends beyond Mongolia. The Deliberative Polling® method was also used in Finland’s first national-level mini-public, the Citizens’ Parliament, and Professor Fishkin has collaborated on several projects throughout the years with the Social Science Research Institute at Åbo Akademi University.
